Most South African Google Ads agencies charge in one of three ways: a percentage of your ad spend (usually 10% to 20%), a flat monthly fee, or a flat fee with a minimum. At Launch Digital, Google Ads management starts at R6,995 a month excl. VAT, on top of what you pay Google for clicks.
That fee is separate from your ad budget. If you want to know what the clicks themselves cost, read our guide on how much Google Ads cost in South Africa. This post is about the other half of the bill: what you pay the agency, and what you should get for it.
Key takeaways
- You pay two things: your ad spend (to Google) and a management fee (to the agency).
- A percentage of spend rewards the agency for spending more, not for getting you more leads.
- A flat fee is easier to budget for and keeps the agency focused on results.
- A cheap fee usually means a junior, a template campaign and no landing page work.
The three ways Google Ads agencies charge
1. A percentage of ad spend
The agency takes a cut of what you spend on Google, often 10% to 20%, usually with a minimum fee. It looks fair because the fee grows as the account grows. The catch is that the agency earns more when you spend more, whether or not that spend brings in more customers.
2. A flat monthly fee
You pay a fixed amount each month for a set scope of work. It is the easiest model to budget for, and the agency’s income doesn’t depend on pushing your spend up. This is how we charge, because it keeps the conversation on cost per lead.
3. A setup fee plus a monthly fee
Some agencies add a once-off fee to build the account, tracking and first campaigns. That is reasonable when real build work happens. Ask what the setup fee buys you: keyword research, conversion tracking and landing pages are worth paying for, a copied template is not. Our once-off account setup is R4,500 for businesses that want us to build the account and then run it themselves.
What your management fee should include
Whatever the price, a fair fee should cover these as a minimum:
- Conversion tracking on calls and forms, so you can see cost per lead, not just clicks
- Regular search term reviews and negative keywords, so you stop paying for the wrong searches
- Ad copy written and tested for your offer
- Landing page advice, or landing pages built for each campaign
- A monthly report in plain English: leads, cost per lead and what changes next
- A named, senior person you can talk to
If your agency only reports clicks, impressions and click-through rate, you are paying for activity, not results.
Red flags: when cheap management costs you more
A low fee is only cheap if the account performs. Watch for these:
- Long lock-in contracts. A good agency keeps you by getting results. Ours are month-to-month.
- You don’t own the account. The Google Ads account should be in your name, so the history stays with you if you leave.
- No tracking. Without conversion tracking, nobody can tell you which spend brings in customers.
- Set and forget. Campaigns need weekly attention. A fee too low to pay for that time won’t get it.
How to compare quotes
Put every quote on the same footing: total monthly cost (fee plus ad spend), what work is included, who does it, how long you are tied in, and what happens if results don’t come. A slightly higher flat fee with tracking, landing page work and a guarantee often costs less per customer than the cheapest quote. Frequently asked questions
How much does a Google Ads agency cost in South Africa?
Most agencies charge either 10% to 20% of your ad spend, a flat monthly fee, or a flat fee with a minimum. Launch Digital’s Google Ads management starts at R6,995 a month excl. VAT, plus your ad spend paid directly to Google.
Is the management fee included in my ad budget?
No. Your ad budget goes to Google for clicks. The management fee goes to the agency for running the account. Always ask for both numbers when you compare quotes.
Is a percentage of spend or a flat fee better?
A flat fee is usually better for small and medium businesses. It is easier to budget for, and the agency isn’t paid more just for spending more of your money.
Can I run Google Ads myself instead?
Yes, and some businesses should. If your budget is small, a once-off professional setup and a short handover can be better value than monthly management. We offer that for R4,500.
