How do Google Ads work?
Google Ads is essentially an auction which is focused around keywords. Advertisers choose a list of keywords to target that are relevant to their business offerings, which they then create adverts for.
Advertisers bid on these keywords, deciding how much they are willing to pay for a Google user to click on their ad. This bid, combined with a Quality Score of the advert created, determines which Google ads appear on the search results.
How much do Google Ads cost?
When it comes to Google Ads, there are generally 2 costs:
- Ad Spend – what you pay Google for clicks
- Management Fees – what you pay a company like Launch to get you results
Google Ads is known as a “pay per click”, or PPC, platform because you only pay when a Google user clicks on your advert.
How much you pay per click is called “cost per click”, or CPC, which is calculated according to a complex formula.
It is hard to say how much a click will cost you because it depends on various factors such as number of advertisers, search popularity and the quality of your ads. If we were to give you a ballpark figure then you can expect anything between R4 and R25.
If you use a Google Ads company like us, then we would charge you a monthly management fee to set up, manage & optimise your ads on a weekly basis for best results.
The biggest mistake a business can make when it comes to Google Ads is to “set and forget” – this is a surefire way to blow your budget. Google Ads requires constant monitoring and optimisation to ensure you are only getting qualified clicks and traffic to your website.

How much should I spend on Google Ads?
We use a complex formula which helps us determine what your monhtly budget should be.
This is a backwards process, as we have to start with the Cost Per Click (CPC). This is how much you pay for a Google user to click on your advert. Once we have the CPC we can start estimating how much it will cost to send visitors to your site.
How much you pay for 1 click depends on many factors such as the popularity of the keywords you are targeting, the number of competing advertisers and the industry you are in.
Once we have the CPC we can start estimating what your budget should be.
How do you manage our budget?
If you do not manage your budgets correctly, then your credit card can take a nasty hit.
This is why we use a “daily” budget to manage your spend. This is calculated by taking your total “monthly budget” and dividing it over 30 days.
Google Ads will not spend more than your daily budget. Google is by no means perfect, which means that some days you might exceed your daily budget by 1 or 2%.
But we monitor your budgets weekly to ensure that you are not over or underspending.
